In all, from initial consultation to finished sculpture, there are over 26 different stages in creation of a bronze sculpture. Here are selected steps to show some of this process.
To create a piece of art, an artist must first have an inspiration. In a commissioned, such as a WWII soldier, the commissioning body usually dictates a set of criteria. The original concept for this piece was to create an accompanying statue for the WWII doughboy that has stood on the “The Five Corners” in Uniontown PA.To create a compatible piece, I photographed and measured the original doughboy. I researched materials from the WWII period and developed an image of which the form would take.
Styrofoam adhered to a welded, tubular steel armature is often used as an armature for large figures. An aluminum wire armature is used for small figures. The armature is the means of supporting the clay/wax/or plaster that a sculptor will use to model the form in detail.
After hundreds of man hours, even in a piece as small as this WWII maquette, a finished bronze statue is ready for display. Unless melted down, a bronze statue should last hundreds of years.
